Our story.

Plant-based has never tasted this good.

From the beginning, we had only one objective; to harness our knowledge of food and science to create protein rich, plant-based meat alternatives that look the part and taste like the real thing. 

Meat inspired, plant perfected.

To us, it’s all about texture, taste, flavour and above all, quality.


We invested a lot of time to get it right. By introducing water, pressure and heat to our multi plant-protein blend, we created flavourful, fibrous textures so similar to the real thing that it leaves people wanting more.

 On The Green Side happened when a pioneering food scientist and an unconventional farmer met over a bottle of wine. By combining their capabilities, they gave wings to an idea that has international appeal.

 Chris is a Food Scientist with years of research and development experience in product development, especially hydro-colloids and meat proteins.


He has always believed that the current meat industry model is unsustainable for providing a growing world population with protein. He is passionate about using his experience in food product dev

He has always believed that the current meat industry model is unsustainable for providing a growing world population with protein. He is passionate about using his experience in food product development to create delicious plant-based food products that are the perfect alternatives to meat.

 John started his career as a merchant banker, bond and derivatives trader who had a passion for farming. With the deregulation of the South African fruit market at the start of the new millennium, he spotted an opportunity to turn his part-time hobby into full-time work. 


Apart from his successful farming operation, he also developed a ci

 John started his career as a merchant banker, bond and derivatives trader who had a passion for farming. With the deregulation of the South African fruit market at the start of the new millennium, he spotted an opportunity to turn his part-time hobby into full-time work. 


Apart from his successful farming operation, he also developed a citrus production, logistics and marketing group, working with local communities in the land restitution and reform space. From the beginning when Chris approached him with the idea of plant-based nutrition, he recognised the potential and future of the concept.
